Christian Counseling - How to Counsel a Friend
Have you ever had a friend come to you with a problem or for advice about a significant issue in their life and you were not sure how to respond to them? When I was a child, my best friend's father died and I didn't know what to say to him, so I didn't say anything. For the better part of a year we just didn't talk about it until almost the end of our time together. This uncertainty about what to say in life's most challenging situations causes anxiety for many people. But the anxiety is unnecessary. The more I learned about counseling and what it means to counsel a person, I discovered that it is very simple and anyone can do it. You do not have to be pro at it. Chances are, your friends are going to come to you before they ever go to a professional. So you always will be a valuable line of defense for them.
In my observation, too many ministers of the Gospel preach to an audience as if they were a group of perpetual Christian one-to-three-year olds. They do not cover the gamut of levels that a congregational audience represents.
